To test this I used a technique that Roger Cicala at Lensrentals talks about quite often. I made an image of a flat surface with texture, in this case the asphalt on a street. I ran this through the “Find Edges” filter in Photoshop. This pro-grade zoom has the preferred f/2.8 constant-aperture rating favored by most enthusiast and professional photographers, along with robust weather-resistant build quality. Panasonic’s S1-series mirrorless cameras are notoriously chunky and the lens follows suit, weighing the best part of a kilogram. Highlights include a fast and near-silent autofocus system, with a push-pull focus ring for switching between autofocus and manual focus. Image quality is mostly impressive although corner-sharpness could be better, especially towards the long end of the zoom range. Bokeh is nice and smooth even when stopping down a little, aided by an 11-blade aperture, while colour fringing and distortions are effectively eliminated by in-camera corrections. However, the competing Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens is every bit as good and only costs half the price.

So, it makes sense that manufacturers always seem to have at least a couple in their arsenal of lenses. Sigma definitely has some nice zooms in this range, and one that was recently introduced is the 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens. What makes this lens intriguing is that even though it has a fixed maximum aperture of f2.8, which is pretty fast, it’s still a very compact lens. Let’s take a closer look at it. Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens Build Quality: We do realise, however, that bokeh evaluation is subjective, so we've included several 100% crops for your perusal. Sharpness The lens is constructed of 16 elements in 12 groups including 2 FLD elements, 2 SLD elements and 3 aspherical elements.

Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, are not a problem for the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art, even at the edges of the frame. Light Fall-off This is to say: I have had great experience with Sigma and look forward to investing more into their products. The only problem I have is that L mount is limited currently by cameras, including the S5II, whose AF simply doesn't keep up with the competition, and Sony cameras (whose mount I can switch my lenses to), are too small and fiddly for my medium sized hands. Center-frame sharpness is superb at shorter focal lengths, even wide open at f/2.8. Sharpness dips slilghtly as you head towards 70mm, though not by a noticable amouont. The One R core houses the processor, LCD screen, and built-in mics and sits inside one half of the battery base. The other half houses the mods. At launch, the One R has the option for a Dual Lens 360 Mod for 360 5.7K footage, a 4K Wide Angle Mode for 60 frames per second, or a high-end, 1-inch-wide Angle Mod with a 1-inch camera sensor for 19-megapixel stills and 5.3K video. The 1-inch sensor mod, a sort of high-end action camera, was designed in collaboration with Leica. Once again, for those who didn't seem to read what I wrote: The Metabones Smart Adapter brought EF lenses to Sony *full frame FE mount* at a time when Sony themselves had a very limited lens selection.Potentially a highly attractive 'step-up' lens for mirrorless shooters, Sigma promises that image quality from this compact zoom will be comparable to the Art-series 24-70mm F2.8. We've had the new lens for a few days, and we've been shooting with it on the Panasonic S1R so you can get a first look at its image quality. Compared to its main rival, the popular Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD, the new Sigma 28-70mm also has the edge, with the Tamron measuring almost 12cms in length and weighing in at 550g. The lens is is a little susceptible to flare when shooting directly into the sun, even with the supplied lens hood fitted, but overall it is well controlled thanks to the lens' Super Multi-Layer Coating. Macro The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS Sports lens will include 20 elements across 15 groups, including six FLD, two SLD, and three aspherical lens elements.
