The characters all suddenly seemed to have a personality transplant and some of the scenarios were frankly absurd. Not only does everyone in the book let this dangerous behaviour slide, Freda is welcomed with open arms into the family and she and Marianne become BFFs. But it also portrays a relationship between a 15 year old school girl and a 25 year old music teacher as a good and pure thing. A real page turner, with so many questions to be answered and secrets to be revealed because as the title of the book suggests, who is telling the truth? We all agreed that though we enjoyed the book the ending felt a little rushed and also a little twee with things turning out the way they did.

I had already bought this book before reading some of the other Susan Lewis books, otherwise I wouldn't have. Jane Corry, bestselling author of My Husband's Wife --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. My only issue was that this was a fairly lengthy read and I think it could have been a tad shorter but hey, it just gave us more time to spend with some interesting people and mystery that keeps you guessing. Great characters, a heartbroken Joely on a train ride to a virtually unknown ghostwriting assignment. The case here is obviously haebophilia and while it is still a disturbing thought to most, it is quite often an accepted practice in many cultures. Because men, they really can't help themselves and all women are sluts who are at fault for all their wrong doings.

That being said, I think I would find it very hard to have a rational discussion on these topics with people who disagreed with my thought that any sexual relationship with someone below the age of sixteen is not okay in any sense. The landscape around the house was also beautifully drawn, to the point where it was easy to imagine it.It’s also statutory rape, the main difference being that statutory rape means to rape with the assumed consent of the state — inappropriate sexual behaviour with a minor in your care; see teacher. And considering what the basis of this story is about, I would have thought she would have been reigned in a little more. Overall I think the best way for me to describe this book is that it had an interesting initial concept but unfortunately just could have been executed better.

So how does Freda know the intimate details of what her brother got up to in Paris or in his uncle’s back garden, unless he told his sister, which would be really creepy. But now she's ready to tell the story that has haunted her for forty years - about a 15-year-old girl falling madly in love with her teacher. The story covers two timelines that are easy to follow once you get past the first third of the book where the storyline is hard to get into.Upon arriving, Joely discovers that Freda has already begin the memoir, having written the first two chapters already, and it is her firm wish that Joely continue in the vein with which she began. The student is referred to as 'a Lolita' at one point, the way Lolita is often referred to erroneously as some kind of seductress and not a child who is exploited by a middle aged man. I adore these – they take me back to my first overseas holiday to Austria when I was 12 and we rode the funicular in Salzburg. I know times were different in the 60s but it is never acknowledged that a 15yr old can't have an 'affair' with her teacher, this relationship is abusive and illegal.

We talked about how we felt about the relationship between the school girl and her teacher, whether we felt it was really love or something else. There were so many layers and so many leaps between the past and the present that I had to keep myself alert for the twists and turns.
