Description

Zijn neurotische vrouw Julia probeert met hun pasgeboren zoon een enigszins normaal gezinsleven op gang te brengen, maar dat wordt bemoeilijkt door Peters herinneringen aan de oorlog. Louisa Young does a wonderful job of making the characters immediately real and the reader is very quickly engaged in the story. He has risen fast through the ranks to become a captain himself, a position almost elevated enough to make him worthy of his beloved, when he is wounded and sent home: "Half of my face is missing.

The story is actually about Riley and Nadine, who meet while they're pre-teens and later fall in love despite their class differences: Riley's working-class, Nadine's upper class. The characters in My Dear I Wanted to Tell You enter the story strangely underdeveloped - their motives and reasons for falling in love are never quite explained - and never quite recover. This book uses the letters and cards that are sent to go some way to describe the feelings that this dreadful upheaval causes. Worried that her husband is slipping away, Julia is left alone with her fears when Rose joins the nursing corps to work with a pioneering plastic surgeon treating wounded and disfigured soldiers. And now My Dear I Wanted To Tell You, her fourth novel for adults, is set amid the desperation of the first world war. A novel that didn't quite seem to know what it wanted to be, My Dear I Wanted to Tell You is a surprisingly rounded WWI story that goes beyond the typical narrative.

Op zoek naar een nieuw begin is een dappere en briljante ode aan een periode waarin de oorlog diepe wonden heeft nagelaten, en het is even ontroerend als inspirerend. Although the reader might know when the war began, how devastating it was and how and when it ended, the characters in this novel like everyone involved at the time didn't know it was about to start or when or even if it would end and you get a sense of how that must have been for them - also of the unimaginable horror of war for all concerned and not just the combatants.Young takes time to build them up and this is probably why a third of the way in I was thinking 'it's good, but I don't see what all the fuss is about'. He's officer class through and through and is married to the appearance obsessed Julia whose only skill is her beauty. The postcard continues, providing the soldier with a tick box to indicate the severity of his injury. For me personally it was an eye-opener to another world - both of my grandfathers died very young because of that war and I therefore never met either of them.

The Children's Book by A S Byatt beautifully conveys the pre-war era while the under-rated Half of the Human Race by Anthony Quinn also addresses the changes in the role of women in society. Riley's own awareness of trying to lift himself towards better things, and his family's reaction to this are all quite evocatively told.In a fit of fury and boyish pride, Riley enlists in the army and finds himself involved in the transformative nightmare of the twentieth century. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book and what I got from reading it was a unique insight into the way that war can worm it's way into every part of your life.

They are the Romeo and Juliet of the story - star-crossed lovers who are torn apart by circumstances. Well, what did happen to the traditionally brought-up women who lost all hope of marriage, because all the young men are dead? When he was ripped away for so long she felt useless, shriveled-up and without purpose for the rest of her life. Working class Riley Purefoy and posh, aristocratic Nadine Waveney meet as children and become friends when Riley’s brains, talent and personality lead him to work in the household of a rich artist. In plain English, this means that I may receive a small commission (at no cost to you) if you purchase something through the links provided. There's also a sweet and realistic love story and a fascinating subplot about reconstructive facial surgery.
