They were a very close knit, but liberal and tolerant family, and their upbringing was idyllic, despite the occasional spectre of long term historical anti-semitism in Hungary. And when her great-grandson, Dov, decided to use social media to track down the family of the GI, 96-year-old Lily found herself making headlines round the world. The backstory is a friend told me this book existed, but it wasn't being sold in the United States yet. I feel like I’ve learned A LOT while reading it and I plan to continue learning and telling people about it.

Z Osvienčimu bola Lily odoslaná do pracovného tábora do muničnej továrne v Altenburgu a odtiaľ bola prinútená zúčastniť sa pochodu smrti. It has a clarity and honesty that renders the reader painfully connected to the narrative and to Lily herself. For decades Lily could not talk about her experiences in the Holocaust, her fellow citizens in Israel being divided essentially into two categories, fellow survivors with whom it was felt there was no need to talk about it, and those, like Shmuel, who had not been through those experiences and who could never understood what the survivors had been through. So I did not start reading this book without prior knowledge -to some degree - of survivors’ experiences. When Holocaust survivor Lily Ebert was liberated in 1945, a Jewish-American soldier gave her a banknote on which he’d written ‘Good luck and happiness’.

At the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, there is a plaque that reads, ‘For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity, where the Nazis murdered about one and a half million men, women and children, mainly Jews, from various countries of Europe’.Lily has dedicated her life to sharing her astonishing story so that the world would never again descend into such depths. Príbeh sa rýchlo stal virálnym a Lily mala dokonca možnosť porozprávať sa s vojakovou rodinou cez Zoom.

Stories of victims trading food for the Torah, or still finding time for regular prayer show us that many people demonstrated immense resilience and determination to keep going, in spite of all the darkness they faced.Having read this book I am struck by two things; Lily Ebert is a remarkable woman and her great grandson, Dov Forman, is also a very remarkable young man.
