No discography - though I suppose this is forgivable, given the creative promiscuity of all three bands. It's something of a history of a particular era and mindset in Great Britain, focusing on three bands in particular: Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound. Strange Attractor Press have announced that a new edition of David Keenan's book England's Hidden Reverse will be published this November.

A new revised and expanded edition of David Keenan’s seminal secret history of the UK’s esoteric underground. Dzin Lama, Rinpoche, and English composer William Lawes, Tibet’s beatification of the outsize American oddball specialty singer Tiny Tim should come as no surprise” (251-2).

How interesting it would be to someone with no prior knowledge of its subject matter is an open question. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. Coil had successfully rebirthed themselves into their lunar phase, opening themselves up to everything they were closed off to before to create two of their masterpieces, the Moon’s Milk EPs (1998-9) andboth volumes of Musick To Play In The Dark (1999-2000) . Was ein Glück, dass wir's hier mit Sachliteratur zu tun haben, uns den ganzen Rattenschwanz einer Interpretation ersparen dürfen und schlicht von einem Referenzwerk reden können.

Keenan does his best to make most Current 93 releases sound like essential listening, but perhaps I'm missing something in the music. The book was the definitive biography of UK experimental music groups Coil, Current 93 and Nurse With Wound, and chronicled these artists’ development and growth alongside the post-punk post-industrial underground music scene that birthed them, from the late 70s through to the present. Read today, England’s Hidden Reverse stands as the definitive document of a unique collective of uncompromising, original and underrated artists as well as a fascinating glimpse into the early obsessions and development of one of our key authors. The first 300 copies will come with a signed bookplate and a 32pp EHR Colour Supplement, containing a selection of colour images, which now appear in black and white in the current edition.Keenan charts the highs – Coil’s visionary industrial releases Scatology (1984), Horse Rotorvator (1986) and Love’s Secret Domain (1991), Current 93’s transition from the harsh, tape loop soundscapes of Nature Unveiled (1984) to the apocalyptic folk music of masterpieces Thunder Perfect Mind (1992), Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre (1994) and All The Pretty Little Horses (1996), Nurse With Wound’s first flowering of Stapleton’s unhindered vision on Homotopy To Marie (1982) and their epic drone sculpture Soliloquy For Lilith (1988). David Tibet, a Malaysian-born Crowley-obsessive armed with a Tibetan thighbone trumpet and a fascination for theology and the occult, would form Current 93.

I desperately wanted to read England’s Hidden Reverse when it first came out, but couldn’t afford a copy.

With Gen passing as well in 2020, the world of the 80s and 90s underground subculture described in England’s Hidden Reverse seems to be fading ever faster in time’s rearview mirror. The Current 93 tracks I've listened to have a maudlin charm, but rarely does the actual music have any spark. It’s fun to hang out with these mystics, though sometimes their drug-fueled religious fetishism can get a bit portentous, it’s never short of entertaining.Having] decided that Noddy is a gnostic deity, then it’s a small step to thinking that I might as well worship Punch and Judy. Somehow I got the latter, but missed out on the original run of “England’s Hidden Reverse” - rock critic David Keenan’s continuation of the story so to say. Written over a period of six years and first published in 2003, the book moves between John Balance and Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson of Coil’s original Threshold House in Chiswick and the old boys’ school they later moved to in Weston-super-Mare, to Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound’s goat farm and visionary art environment in Cooloorta in Southern Ireland, to the roof of a house in Muswell Hill where David Tibet of Current 93 receives a vision of Noddy crucified in the sky.
