Having just taken over the leadership of our Men's Ministry' at my Church this book has opened my eyes to what God wants to see if ALL men. Everything is explained in such a way that I often stopped to think, 'Why didn't I see that before'. But through a vast majority of the writing it comes across as though he is making a long spiritual to-do list that causes more burden than freedom, which is what the disciplines are really for. Hughes does an excellent job of breaking down the various types of discipline that are severally lacking in masculinity today and provides simple steps to practice to improve yourself and make yourself a more Christ honoring man. The final chapter is about the relationship of God’s grace to discipline which I kind of wished was the first chapter of the book instead of the end.

Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. The book is then packed with another 50 pages or so of 'resources' including the hilariously dated 'Bible on Audiocassette', which, honestly, I'm surprised made it into the updated version (the word is so old that my spell-checker is telling me I have it spelled incorrectly). For someone who didn't have a father to invest this type of Godly influence into their lives, this book would probably be invaluable at an early age. I also appreciate the book recommendations near the end of each chapter and Those given by many of the pillars of our faith near the end of the book. When you have a book that has been revised and updated several times since it was first printed in 1991, you know you have something rather special. There are also Bible reading plans (including M'Cheyne, which I recommend), helpful Proverbs regarding speech, hymns, choruses, and praise Psalms. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide.

Because I think Hughes misses the mark in appropriating the spiritual disciplines within the context of God’s grace to His people in Christ. The difference between legalism and discipline is one of motivation: legalism is self-centered; discipline is God-centered. Well, it's taken me over 4 to come back to it, but it once again was a great challenge, full of practical insight, and covering a broad range of life. After all the lack of manhood is not a challenge to American society alone, but to the world as a whole. I recommend this book on discipline to any man who wants to break out from the norm and truly worship God through a consistent prayer life and and a closer understanding of the word of God.Each chapter looks at the discipline being discussed by follow by a section titled “Food for Thought” that has great discussion questions and there’s also an application/response section following that. Kent Hughes skillfully weaves together the teachings of Scripture with real-life examples as he powerfully teaches us what true Christian manhood looks like in the ordinary details of our lives. It not only teaches how to live a life of Christian discipline, but also instills the desire to do so into a young heart longing to live a life of integrity, meaning, and fulfillment. The man who carries on an act of impurity is not simply breaking a human code, nor even sinning against the God who at some time in the past gave him the gift of the Spirit. He is very helpful and speaks to you as if you were both sitting down for a cup of coffee at the barista.

And if there is a spark of spiritual desire in your soul, this book will surely kindle it into a blazing passion for godly discipline. This book has several uses; as a text for personal reading; for personal in depth study through to group teaching and discussions. This book is an excellent overview of the practices that Christian men should work to incorporate into all aspects of their lives.Just when we think we are the safest, when we feel no need to keep our guard up, to work on our inner integrity, to discipline ourselves for godliness - temptation will come! Be involved, be willing to be uncomfortable, to be challenged, and to fail, if all for the glory of Christ. This inspiring, popular book has been speaking to the hearts of men for the past 10 years, and its words are still relevant. This valuable book focuses on practical discipline in many differing aspects of our lives in 19 chapters split into 6 parts.
