They include Richard of York, descended on both sides from Edward III and father of the later Yorkist Kings, the reigning King - Henry VI and his wife Margret of Anjou, and the Neville family – including the man who would become known as the Kingmaker.

The latest book from Conn Iggulden in his War of the Roses series and i have to say the finest in this series and quite possibly in his personal library of writing. For a while i almost had to check that it was really was written by Conn Iggulden, the style felt different, older, more mature. My father loved working with wood and equations, but he also recited ‘Vitai Lampada’ with a gleam in his eye and that matters, frankly. During his journey to France, he is waylaid by a pirate ship, commissioned by Richard, who kill William. Stormbird is a novel of a genre that I personally wouldn’t normally read, its based on historical events and set 1437!in the very next chapter the preconceptions he has let you build, he tears down, and you mentally shift allegiance over and over again, until your head is spinning, and you realise the sheer complexity and scale of the conflict. Credit where credit is due, though: the writing flows quite well and some of the landscape descriptions/actions scenes are done more than competently. Their marriage seems happy, however, there are those who live outside the royal court who are suffering. Finally, it is about the five great families descended from King Edward III and how they fought and maneuvered to control the throne of England.

Iggulden has set it in the time of the fall of the English Kingdom of France in the late 1440s and the civil unrest that followed. This, for me, made the story quite strong because we got to see how the decisions made by the ruling class affected those in the ranks of the army. Book 2 (Trinity) was published September 2014 and the final instalment (Bloodline) is scheduled for release in September this year.Stormbird is the first of a series of books about The War of the Roses and I am sure it will be as successful as Iggulden's previous novels. When he wakes from his first bout of illness, he dismisses Richard Duke of York from being Lord Protector and reverses everything that Richard did. The brilliant retelling of the Wars of the Roses continues with Trinity, the second gripping novel in the new series from historical fiction master, Conn Iggulden. Yet there are those, such as the Plantagenet Richard, Duke of York, who believe England must be led by a strong king if she is to survive. Being a thriller, Blackwater was a change in genre for the author, who had mainly written historical fiction up to that point.

I like how the main characters are flawed and they are not super smart like some brilliant masterminds, they made mistakes and they didn't get the upper hand for many times, it makes them a lot more human. In 1443, a righteous and honorable English nobleman, William de la Pole, meets with the English spymaster, Derihew Brewer, to arrange peace between England and France. It's a hopeless cause, of course, and it was interesting to see that little known part of the pre-Wars of the Roses period in a novel. With each month that Henry is all but absent as king, Richard, the duke of York, protector of the realm, extends his influence throughout the kingdom. His Lancastrian queen, Margaret of Anjou, rides south with an army of victorious northerners, accompanied by painted warriors from the Scottish Highlands.
